West Palm Beach, Fl. – After Palm Beach Kennel Club’s Rob Gronkowski (Switzler Jammin – Chatty Cathy) broke Atascocita Bowl’s (Dodgem By Design – Atascocita Sally, Suncoast Kennel) 545-Yard Royal Palm Course track record of 29.12 seconds back on November 23, 2013, many thought that record would hold for a very, very long time.
You see the puppy pro-bowler clocked in on that Saturday afternoon in an astonishing, unbelievable and unheard of 29.02, shaving .10 off the previous mark, becoming the fastest Greyhound ever to grace the 82-year-old’s track surface.
Well it’s time to rewrite the record book again.
On a beautiful, sunny south Florida Monday afternoon – March 3 to be exact – the newly-ordained captain of the 2013 American Greyhound Track Operators of America (AGTOA) All-America Team stunned even the most avid professional and casual racing fan the by crossing the finish line in 29.01 seconds, a brand-spanking new track record.
“I am extremely proud of Gronk breaking his own record especially after his last race where he was knocked out of contention at the start of the race.”, said owner Steve Sarras. “Every exceptional greyhound I've ever had does not like to lose and Gronk proved he REALLY DISLIKES losing. He just exploded from the box and made a statement or a “Gronk Spike” if you may. I was on the phone with one of my best friends from New England and asked him if he was near his computer. He said he was so I said tune in to Palm Beach, Gronk runs in 15 minutes. He called me the second it was over and we both were hoping he had broken the 29 second barrier. We were still pumped with a 29.01. My son was watching too as they were out of school because of a snow day. He turned to me and said “Wow Dad, he is really fast.” He and my entire family always watch Gronk's races and have been blessed by God to have such an incredible greyhound who has brought us so much pride and joy to our family and to our beloved industry and close-knit greyhound community. It truly is incredible to see the social media explode after he runs. He has lots of fans following him. I think Gronk knew he had to prove himself to the world he was worthy of the Captain of the All-American team status. He sure has set the bar high for the 2014 team already and it’s just the beginning of March. He really is exciting to watch. Great race call by Mike Jameson all the way with his excitement beaming throughout the call as he knew he was calling a historic run by an almost certain historic greyhound.”
Kennel operator Norm Rader added, “Gronk is simply the fastest dog I've ever had and I've had lots of fast ones! If he gets a clean break it's over. He's a professional in the kennel and does everything right, as all true champs do.”
And the good news kept on coming.
The very next day, March 4, the National Greyhound Association (NGA) honored Rob Gronkowski with the 2013 Rural Rube Award, officially making “Captain America”, a moniker bestowed on him by track Announcer Mike Jameson, the fastest sprinter in the country last year.
It must be noted that Rader Racing Kennel’s Smokey Joe (Flying Penske – Okgo Box To Wire) was honored by the NGA with the Flashy Sir Award, signifying the best distance racer in the country for 2013. Joe was also awarded a spot on the 2013 All-America Team for his many outstanding accomplishments.
Next up for Gronkowski is the 2014 $50,000 Arthur J. Rooney, Sr. St. Patrick’s Invitational on Saturday afternoon, March 15.
Rob Gronkowski now owns four of the six fastest Royal Palm Course times in Palm Beach Kennel Club history.
“This is a very rare event indeed when both the Rural Rube and Flashy Sir Award winners are racing for the same kennel and competing at the same track.”, said Palm Beach Kennel Club Director of Publicity Theresa Hume. “We are very honored to host such great talent at our track. We wish both Gronk and Joe much success during the upcoming year.”
